Bornheim near Bonn - May 18, 2010 - "The partial outage of the '.de' domain has demonstrated the high, but often times underestimated, importance of the Domain Name System or DNS in short", explains the German Internet pioneer Sven-Holger Wabnitz, CEO of domain management software maker DomiNIC (www.dominic.de). According to the experience of the Internet specialist there are a lot of businesses that deal with the domain and DNS management in a rather lax way. In doing so they run the risk of experiencing a domain chaos similar to what happened to DENIC, the official registry for the ".de" top level domain, Wabnitz warns. As far as the businesses are concerned, there is naturally no risk of an outage of the German Internet but for a company it can be similarly dramatic if e.g. the own ".de" domain cannot be reached as the head of DomiNIC points out. "Many large corporations administer thousands of domains for different countries, brands or sales promotions but also for the internal workflow like their Intranet. Interruptions of these systems can lead to severe economic losses, not to mention damage to their public image", the domain expert illustrates and advises businesses to take care of a more systematic domain and DNS management than it is found in many companies presently. Sven-Holger Wabnitz belongs to the early pioneers of the information and Internet era in Germany. In 1994 already he was appointed to the supervisory board of the German Internet initiative (Telemarkt eG) by the Gesellschaft für Mathematik and Datenverarbeitung (GMD = Association for mathematics and data processing which is now known as the Fraunhofer Insitute). This was two years even before the DENIC eG was founded as the official registry for the ".de" top level domain. Whereas back then there were not even 100,000 ".de" domains, there are now over 13 million domains with that ending. The former vision of the omnipresence of the Domain Name System has long since become reality - with severe consequences in the case of an outage as the recent ".de" issues of DENIC clearly demonstrated to everyone. The DomiNIC software for the registration and administration of domains was for the first time commercially deployed in 1995. Today DomiNIC is among the leading software solutions for automated domain management. The program for domain registration bodies and businesses is being offered in two versions: DomiNIC for Domains and DomiNIC for Brands. The client list of the company ranges from large telecommunications corporations to reputable brand owners.
